Waveforms

Gradient Pattern Experiments: 6 point gradients overlay a dotted grid. Theses studies are formatted into one of two categories—Sine or Spike Wave Formations.

These illustrations were created to explore various elements of design, such as: proportion, blocking, density, tempo, scale, and contrast.

Each pattern profile can be digitally manipulated to create compounding digital mosaics / animations where light dances with dark.

There are 39 pattern profiles in this series. Each is drawn with graphite pencil. They vary in size. The smallest profile is 7.5 x 7.5 in. while the largest is 12 x 8.25 in.

Sine Wave Formation Samples

Patterns which both ebb and flow:

The gradient is oriented along a continuum such that the extremes never meet.

The samples are framed around a peak (Light) or its opposite trough (Dark).

These extremes flow directionally towards their inverse before rebounding.

Spike Wave Formation Samples

Patterns which either ebb or flow:

The gradient is oriented in a single direction such that the extremes meet.

The samples are framed around points of contrast, where Light meets Dark.

The extremes move step-wise toward their crescendos before repeating their path.

Much love to my creative compatriot, Karl Gerstner, and his 1965 essay, Structure and Movement.
